Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona is located at the site of Emperor Domitian's first-century AD stadium.  There is a small section where ruins of the original stadium can be seen below the present level.

Pope Innocent X, who reigned in 1644-1655, commissioned the present architecture and art.  Shown above is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) by Bernini.  Above it is the Obelisk of Domitian.
