Baths of Diocletian

 

 

 

 

The Baths of Diocletian are the largest baths in Rome.  Construction began in 298 AD by Maximianus on Diocletian's behalf.  It was completed in 306 AD.  The baths covered 32 acres of land.

 

The entire building was still in use up to the beginning of the sixth century.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In 1561, Pope Pius IV ordered that the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angeles and the Martyr's be build inside the frigidarium of the Baths of Diocletian.
